ONTARIO BIKE SUMMIT
Trust attended and participated as moderator in the Ontario Bike Summit, which wrapped up last week in Waterloo. The summit, organized by Elanor McMahon, founder of Share the Road, brought together about 150 policy makers, politicians, transportation specialists and cycling enthusiasts from Ontario and beyond. During the conference Share the Road unveiled their plans for moving forward in developing a provincial approach to cycling. More info will be posted in the coming weeks on their website - http://www.sharetheroad.ca/

On the second day of the conference Share the Road released the results of their poll on cycling. The organization polled both cyclists and cycling advocates to identify priorities for moving forward. Results will be posted on their website soon – visit http://www.sharetheroad.ca/ for more details.

FRIENDS OF SECOND MARSH WELCOME WITHDRAWAL OF APPLICATION FOR ETHANOL FACILITY IN OSHAWA
Friends of Second Marsh, the organization committed to the preservation and protection of the Second Marsh has been opposing FarmTech’s controversial proposal for an ethanol refinery on Oshawa’s waterfront. (See attached press release.)

FarmTech proposes to construct the large-scale refinery beside (and upwind) of the provincially significant Oshawa Second Marsh. An area of 372 ha of wetland and other ecologically significant habitats, Second Marsh is the largest such open space in the Greater Toronto Area. The withdrawal of Farmtech’s air emission application however, does not mean the proposal is dead. According to the article (check link below), FarmTech is withdrawing the application only to repackage it.

TORONTO OPENS WATERFRONT CONNECTION ALONG YONGE ST
On Sept 29, 2009, the City of Toronto officially opened the Yonge St pedestrian promenade and bike lanes. The improved stretch, located between Front St and Queen’s Quay, will provide a much needed north-south connection to the waterfront in Toronto.

The project features wide sidewalks with decorative pavement, pedestrian-scale lighting and granite-clad planter boxes with seat walls. There are also groves of trees, landscaped traffic islands, new crosswalks, public art installations, and new plazas and walkways. As well, the improvements include a 0.6 kilometre-long bicycle lanes and bicycle parking.

TAKE THE BIKE TRAIN BETWEEN TORONTO AND MONTREAL
There’s just under 2 weeks left to take advantage of the Bike Train between Montreal and Toronto. The pilot project was unveiled on August 27th and runs until October 8th, 2009. The Bike Trains run twice daily between Toronto and Montreal, allowing cyclists to take the train with their bikes - no box or disassembly required!

Congratulations to the Bike Train for providing this excellent green tourism and transportation option!
