Thank you for your interest, we have now filled all of our GWTA 2022 volunteer positions..

Volunteers are critical to setting the mood of the GWTA and establishing a warm sense of community. Our volunteers must be friendly and outgoing, enjoy dealing with people and able to work as a team.

Ideal Candidates

Ideal candidates to volunteer for the GWTA have the following:

  • Availability for the scheduled tour dates
  • First Aid/CPR
  • Basic knowledge of bicycle mechanics
  • Ability to read maps, understand/learn logistics and safety aspects of a guided tour
  • Be available for a training session before the GWTA
  • Great customer service attitude experience
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Initiative to perform tasks where needed
  • Excitement & enthusiasm about cycling, the waterfront & adventure
  • Availability to volunteer at a promotional event between February and June (ie: Bike Shows, community events, etc.)

GWTA Roles

There are a variety of roles that volunteers fill in order to make the GWTA a success. Read the descriptions by clicking on the slider and see if there’s one that interests you!

Cycling Guides

Cycling Guides are experienced riders willing to serve as ambassadors and help ensure the safety and enjoyment of the participants. They also:

  • know the rules of the road
  • are familiar with all or a part of the Waterfront Trail route
  • are fit enough to handle the physical demands of riding for 5 consecutive days of over 100km a day
  • can lift 50-pound bags
  • have a valid driver’s license and be prepared to drive when/if needed.

Specific duties will include:

  • marshaling the route
  • taking your turn as the lead
  • rover, or sweep rider,
  • provide mechanical and basic first aid support
  • assist participants with wayfinding
  • help load and unload the luggage truck.

The Cycling Volunteers will be chosen in December each year.

Driving Team

These experienced drivers are over 25 years of age with an excellent driving record.

They are also comfortable driving 15-passenger vans or a 24′ cargo truck.

Support Van

Support Van Volunteers must have an excellent sense of direction, good navigation skills, as well as a willingness to explore new places, meet new people, and have some fun!

  • Filling water jugs and providing support to participants
  • encouraging and cheering on participants at stop points along the route
  • shuttle cycling participants as needed
  • carefully load bikes into support vans

These volunteers may be required to marshal the route.

Luggage Truck Driver

Primary duties of the Luggage Truck Driver are to:

  • Drive the luggage truck to and from base camp
  • help set up the information tent
  • organize associated rider amenities
