A small section of the Waterfront Trail by the Whitby Harbour will remain closed during the upcoming harbour dredging, resulting in a long-term minor detour.
Beginning in July of 2024 and continuing into October 2026, the Whitby Harbour will be undergoing dredging to remove contaminated sediment, which will help clean the water and maintain the health of the local ecosystem.
Parts of the adjacent Victoria Fields will be closed during this time, including a small section (<0.5 km) of the Waterfront Trail through the park. The Trail will follow a signed long-term detour using a temporary 3-metre-wide asphalt trail circumventing the dredging/drying area.
We will continue to post updates on any changes to Trail impacts in the area as work on the harbour progresses.
