NOTL is the official western terminus of the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail and the northern terminus of the very popular Niagara River Recreation Trail. The Trail follows the beautiful Niagara River along a dedicated path from Fort George at Niagara-on-the-Lake to Old Fort Erie in Fort Erie, with the stunning Niagara Falls at the mid-way point. With its award-winning wineries, fabulous historical attractions and natural wonders this section of Waterfront Trail has something for everyone. It was the first site in North America to received international recognition as a “Globally Significant Important Bird Area“. In Fort Erie the Trail continues west along Lake Erie on the Friendship Trail, a 16 km rail trail linking to Port Colborne.
Niagara Region is a popular, busy tourism region. Be prepared to slow down—not hard to do since there is so much to see and enjoy. Consider taking Metrolinx’s Bike Train to the Region
Many thanks to the Niagara Parks Commission who established the Trail in 1986 as part of its mandate to protect and manage the Niagara Escarpment. The Trail is also designated as part of the Trans Canada Trail and the Greater Niagara Circle Route.
