Norfolk’s shoreline is dotted with provincial parks, conservation areas, three public beaches and marshes that make it a naturalist’s haven. The Trail follows mostly quiet rural roads and passes through a couple of small towns and the larger Port Dover.
From the western boundary with Elgin, the Trail follows Lakeshore Rd/Highway 42. This section feels somewhat remote as there are not many services until you reach Port Rowan – make sure you bring plenty of water and a snack to eat. Port Rowan is a big birding centre given its proximity to Long Point and the national headquarters of Bird Studies Canada. Long Point is one of three World Biosphere Reserves along the Waterfront Trail. Long Point Provincial Park features marshland that is home to many bird species and long sandy beaches. For those who wanting to give angling a try, fishing rods are available for loan at the park.
There is camping available at Long Point Provincial Park and nearby Turkey Point Provincial Park. Long-Point Eco Adventures is located just west of Turkey Point and is a worthwhile stop offering bicycle tours, ‘glamping’ and ziplining.
There are a few hills in the river valleys between Long Point and Port Dover. Port Dover is a fun beach town with plenty of dining options and places to stay. From Port Dover, the Lynn Valley Trail provides a mostly off-road connection to Brantford and the VIA Rail Station.
As you tour Norfolk you’ll see over 66 wind turbines. The white towers stand out elegantly against the open blue sky. A visit to the Erie Shores Wind Farm interpretation centre offers great information about these structures and how they produce enough power to supply 12,000 homes.
