Enjoy a beautiful riding experience along the side of the St. Clair River when you visit the Township of St. Clair. The riverside riding stretches over 35km from the Johnson Channel north to the city of Sarnia, passing through five towns and villages. Here the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail is grateful and proud to use the St. Clair River Trail, work on which began in 2002.
It offers bicyclists wide paved roads with dedicated bike lanes as well as some off-road paths for bicyclists and walkers alike to enjoy. The sights and sounds of this riverside community are complemented by quaint cottages, waterfront parks, picnic areas, parking, and washroom facilities.
The towns of Sombra and Port Lambton boast a fascinating history, with associations to the Underground Railroad and Al Capone’s bootlegging operation during Prohibition in the United States. In the Sombra Museum Cultural Centre and Moore Museum, visitors can get a real sense of the rich and fascinating history of the area, dating back to the 18th century.
For a fascinating day trip, ride to the Oil Museum of Canada, one kilometre south of the village of Oil Springs, the site of North America’s first oil rush and commercial oil well.
Grab a bite in Port Lambton, Sombra and Corunna–all have a nice variety of eat-in and take out options.
Campgrounds: Mooretown, Cathcart Park and Branton Cundick Campgrounds all offer riverside views on or near to the Trail.
Ferry Connection to USA: Take the Ferry from Walpole to Algonac on the US side of the River and take the Bay to Bridge Trail. The US route between Marine City and Algonac uses County Rd 29/River Rd. On the Canadian side, you’ll be on the Waterfront Trail. The ferry does not have a set schedule but leaves regularly. A modest fee is charged.
