Access to Rouge Beach and the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail is temporarily closed until 2027 as part of planned improvements to the area. Please follow posted detour signage and respect all closure notices for their safety.
We understand this closure will be frustrating for visitors and local trail users. We recognize how important this area is for recreation, active transportation and waterfront access.
The closure is necessary to safely complete major improvements that will restore sensitive wetland and forest habitat, upgrade visitor facilities and create a new designated trail connection between Rouge Beach and Mast Trail.
The possibility of opening and closing the pedestrian bridge and trail during commuting hours was examined with the general contractor, in order to allow access to Rouge Hill GO.
Unfortunately, after reviewing all options, it was determined that this approach is not feasible from a safety, operational, financial, or project timeline perspective. The risks and complexities involved would compromise both public safety and the integrity of the project.
Heavy construction activity, unstable ground conditions and the lack of safe access for emergency and service vehicles require a full closure of the entire area until work is complete.
These upgrades represent a significant investment in Rouge National Urban Park and will provide long-term benefits for visitors, wildlife and surrounding communities. It is going to vastly improve the visitor experience at at Rouge Beach and create a vital north connection from the Trail to the Rouge National Urban Park’s extensive trail network.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we build a more sustainable and accessible experience for visitors.
