Where the land rushes up from the northernmost points of Lake Superior you’ll find the community of Schreiber, directly on Highway 17. You’ll find plenty of unique ways to celebrate in Schreiber, whether it’s the landscape and natural beauty, history at the Schreiber Discovery Centre (Railway Museum) followed by lots of options to rest and recharge at one of their local restaurants or a night’s rest in one of the motels.

The Trail in Schreiber connects the town site to the water at the Schreiber Beach, one of the most intimate beaches on the north shore of Superior and the midway gate to the famous 60km Casque Iles Trail connecting Terrace Bay to in the east and Rossport in the west.

With its access to exquisite big water paddling, cycling and hiking opportunities you’ll always have plenty to see and do during your stay in Schreiber.

Trail Tips:

The Trail in Schreiber does include the connections to and from the highway, though these are not terribly busy.
Schreiber Beach is an intimate beach well worth the trip to the trailhead and a connects to the Casque Isles Trail. Do not miss a trip to Schreiber Beach.
Some beaches in the area have stones with yooperlite, a mineral that looks fiery under UV light.

Connections

Trans Canada Trail– The Trans Canada Trail network stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, forming the largest trail network in the world. The Lake Huron North Channel section of the Trail is designated as Trans Canada Trail.

The Lake Superior Water Trail – The Lake Superior Water Trail is a significant link in the Trans Canada Trail. A number of the Lake Superior Water Trail access points are connected to TCT designated hiking trails such as the Voyageur Trail, Casque Isles Trail, Nipigon River Recreation Trail and the Coastal trails in Lake Superior Provincial Park and Pukaskwa National Park.

Voyageur Trail – A series of trails of nearly 600 kilometers from Manitoulin Island to Thunder Bay along the shores of Lakes Huron and Superior parallels much of the trade route of the early Voyageurs—hardy, French-speaking fur traders. The trail is pedestrian only, developed for hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing and bush skiing through some of the most scenic and sparsely populated country in Ontario. It is a true wilderness trail with no facilities.

Casque Isles Trail – Brochure with maps can be found here. The Casque Isles trail weaves 53 km (33 miles) along the north shore of Lake Superior, highlighting some of the most stunning vistas of Lake Superior, and linking the communities of Terrace Bay, Schreiber and Rossport together.
